Summary: The cotyledon of 'PR5CN645' is shorter than that of the reference varieties. The leaves of 'PR5CN645' have few to a medium number of lobes whereas those of '5440' have many. The leaf of 'PR5CN645' is narrower with a shorter petiole than that of '5440'. The petal of 'PR5CN645' is wider than that of 'PPS02-364' and '5440'. The silique of 'PR5CN645' is longer than that of 'PPS04-205'. The silique beak of 'PR5CN645' is shorter than that of 'PPS02-364' and longer than that of '5440'. The pedicel of 'PR5CN645' is longer than that of 'PPS04-205'. 'PR5CN645' is earlier maturing than 'PPS04-205' and 'PPS02-364'. At maturity, the plant of 'PR5CN645' is shorter than that of '5440'.

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: medium resistance to lodging
QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS: erucic acid is 0.01% of total fatty acids, oil content is 47.3% of whole dried seed, protein is 39.7% of dried oil free meal, low glucosinolates (10.9 µmol/g)
HERBICIDE REACTION: resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans asexual stage: Phoma lingam)
Origin & Breeding History: 'PR5CN645' is a restorer line in the process of F1 hybrid production. It was derived by crossing an inbred line containing the Rf3 gene in homozygous state to a donor line in a backcrossing scheme. The initial cross was made at Bayer CropScience in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2012. 'PR5CN645' was selected in 2015 on the basis of fertility restoration of numerous male sterile lines and expression of tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium herbicide. Other selection parameters included height, vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, clubroot resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile, glucosinolate content and combining ability.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'PR5CN645' were conducted during the summers of 2015 and 2016 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They were set up in a RCB Design with 3 replications per variety. Each year, the plots consisted of 3 rows that were 6 metres in length with a spacing of 25 cm between rows and 50 cm between plots. The measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements of the cotyledon, leaf, flower and plant height and 60 measurements of the silique. The means were based on a two year average. Mean differences were significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
