The petal of 'PB7CN228' is narrower than that of 'PPS01-140 B-Line'. The silique attitude of 'PB7CN228' is erect whereas the attitude is horizontal for 'PPS01-140 B-Line' and '5440'. The silique of 'PB7CN228' is longer than that of 'PB1CN231' and shorter than that of 'PPS01-140 B-Line' and '5440'. 'PB7CN228' matures later than the reference varieties. At maturity, the plant of 'PB7CN228' is shorter than that of '5440'. The seed coat of 'PB7CN228' is brown whereas it is black for 'PPS01-140 B-Line' and '5440'.

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging and shattering
QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS: erucic acid is 0.02% of total fatty acids, oil content is 49.3% of whole dried seed, protein is 44.1% of dried oil free meal, medium concentration of glucosinolates (15.9 µmol/g)
HERBICIDE REACTION: susceptible to glufosinate ammonium herbicides
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans asexual stage: Phoma lingam) and Clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae)
Origin & Breeding History: 'PB7CN228' is the male fertile maintainer line of 'PA7CN128'. It is a non-transgenic selected line which was derived by crossing an inbred line to a donor line, which was then crossed to a recurring parent in a backcrossing scheme. The initial cross was made at BASF Canada Inc. in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2014. 'PB7CN228' was selected in 2017 on the basis of tolerance to glyphosate herbicides, per se performance, vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, clubroot resistance, seed pod shattering resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile and glucosinolate content.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'PB7CN228' were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They were set up in a RCB design with 3 replications per variety. Each year, the plots consisted of 3 rows that were 6 metres in length with a spacing of 25 cm between rows and 50 cm between plots. The measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements of the cotyledon, leaf, flower and plant height and 60 measurements of the silique. The means were based on a two year average. Mean differences were significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
