The new variety was discovered in 2012 as a naturally occurring branch mutation of the variety 'Smaragd' that was growing in a container at the breeder's nursery in Ederveen, the Netherlands. 'HOOGI023' was selected based on plant growth habit and foliage colour. Asexual reproduction of 'HOOGI023' was first conducted by softwood stem cuttings in 2012 in Ederveen, the Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'HOOGI023' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, application number 2016/0921, purchased from Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in Zybiszow, Poland from 2017 to 2018. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
