The new variety was selected in 2011 based on plant growth habit, foliage colour and outdoor performance. Asexual reproduction of 'SMNTPGF' was first conducted by softwood cutting in 2011 in Grand Haven, Michigan.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNTPGF' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring of 2022 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were transplanted into a 3.8 litre pots in the summer of 2021. Observations and measurements were taken on July 18, 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
