The new variety was selected in 2013 based on plant growth habit, foliage colour and health, disease resistance and cold hardiness. Asexual reproduction of 'RutThu3' was first conducted in 2013 in Tifton, Georgia, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'RutThu3' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the
spring of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All
plants were transplanted into 11.4 litre pots in the summer of 2022. Observations and measurements were taken on August 24, 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
