Summary: The plants of 'RutThu5' have a conic shape whereas those of 'Emerald' have a broad conic to ovoid shape. The plants of 'RutThu5' are larger than those of 'Emerald'. The distance between the new growth on the leading shoot and the branchlets for 'RutThu5' is larger than that of 'Emerald'. The branch of 'RutThu5' is larger than that of 'Emerald'.

SCALE-SHAPED LEAF: narrow acute tip, prominent glands
Origin & Breeding History: 'RutThu5' originated from an open-pollinated cross that occurred in Tifton, Georgia,
USA in 2011. The cross was between the female parent variety 'Fastigiata' and an unnamed male parent. The
new variety was selected in 2011 based on plant growth habit, foliage colour and cold hardiness. Asexual reproduction of 'RutThu5' was first conducted in 2011 in Tifton, Georgia, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'RutThu5' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the
spring of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All
plants were transplanted into 11.4 litre pots in the summer of 2022. Observations and measurements were taken on August 24, 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
