Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Smaragd' (Emerald Cedre)

Summary: The plants of ‘Lilshreckthu' are taller than those of ‘Smaragd'. The spray of ‘Lilshreckthu' are shorter than those of ‘Smaragd'. The branches of ‘Lilshreckthu' have a medium number of branchlets of the first order whereas those of ‘Smaragd' have many branchlets of the first order.

BRANCH: erect to semi-erect attitude, medium rigidity
BRANCHLETS OF FIRST ORDER: medium number, flat type, planar arrangement of spray, erect to semi-erect attitude of spray

LEAF IN SPRING: light green, no variegation
LEAF IN SUMMER: light green, apical yellow variegation
LEAF IN WINTER: medium green, no variegation
SCALE-SHAPED LEAF: straight longitudinal axis, acute tip, non prominent glands, thin, weak glossiness

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Lilshreckthu' originated as a naturally occurring branch sport of the variety ‘Smaragd' discovered in Grottoes, Virginia, USA in the fall of 1997. The new variety ‘Lilshreckthu' was selected based on plant vigour, plant growth habit and foliage colour. Asexual reproduction by softwood cuttings was initiated in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, USA in November of 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘Lilshreckthu' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring of 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were transplanted into 11.4 litre pots on February 17, 2023. Observations and measurements were taken on July 23, 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
