Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Sweetheart' and 'Lapins'
Summary: '13S2009' has less tree vigor and a more spreading habit than the reference varieties. '13S2009' has a shorter pedicel than 'Lapins'. The fruit of '13S2009' has wine red coloured skin and red flesh while the fruit of 'Lapins' has black skin and dark reddish-purple flesh. The stone of '13S2009' is elliptic in shape while that of 'Sweetheart' is round to ovate and 'Lapins' is round. In comparison to the reference varieties, '13S2009' has the latest time of fruit maturity.
Description:
'13S2009' is a sweet cherry variety which has spreading trees with a moderately dense crown. The one-year-old shoots have a semi-erect attitude, no pubescence and weak anthocyanin colouration. The shoots are medium in thickness and length. There are a low to medium number of lenticels. There are very few or no flower buds on the one-year-old shoots. The vegetative buds are long, conical in shape and held out from the shoot. The bud support is medium in size. The current year's shoot of '13S2009' has no pubescence and no anthocyanin colouration at the tip.
The leaf attitude in relation to the shoot is obliquely pointing upwards to horizontal. The leaves are broad elongate in shape with an acute to right angled tip and rounded base. The leaf apex is cuspidate to acuminate and the profile in cross section is concave to flat. There is no pubescence on the lower side of the leaf and no variegation or anthocyanin colouration on the upper side. The leaves of '13S2009' are medium green with weak to moderate glossiness. The leaf margins are dentate and the indentations are shallow to moderately deep. '13S2009' leaves turn yellow - green just before leaf fall. The petioles have anthocyanin colouration and usually more than two reddish-purple, round-shaped nectaries.
'13S2009' flowers mid-season and is self-fertile. It produces a moderate number of flowers which are single, white in colour and borne in clusters. The flower bud is white. The pedicel is moderately thick and has no pubescence. The flower petals are broad elliptic to round and are free to touching. The yellow-green anthers produce pollen. The pistil is normal with no supplementary pistil and no pubescence.
'13S2009' produces large, round shaped fruit that is flattened in lateral view. The largest diameter is towards the middle of the fruit. The skin is wine red coloured with a few medium sized light coloured dots. The suture is not very prominent. The flesh of '13S2009' fruit is red in colour and firm. The juice is dark reddish-purple. The fruit is high in sweetness and weak to moderate in juiciness. The fruit apex is hollow to flat and the stalk is medium in thickness. The stone is large, symmetrical and semi-adherent to non-adherent to the flesh. In lateral view the stone is intermediate in shape between spherical and elongate. In front view it is elliptic and in basal view it is round elliptic. The keel is strongly developed. '13S2009' produces a moderate to large amount of fruit. Fruit setting is moderate to high and the fruit matures very late.
Origin & Breeding History: '13S2009', originated in 1982 from an open pollination of 'Sweetheart' at PARC, Summerland, British Columbia. '13S2009' was selected in 1990. Two propagations were made on Prunus avium rootstock and planted out in a trial block at the Summerland Research Centre in 1985. Evaluation on the selection began upon fruiting. The variety '13S2009' was selected based on maturity date, fruit size, firmness, resistance to splitting, fruit, taste, shape, skin and flesh colour, fertility, luster, productivity and precocity.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '13S2009' were conducted in 1998 and 1999 at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Summerland, British Columbia. The trees were on Colt rootstock.
