Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Sweetheart' and '13S2009'
Summary: 13S2101' is a sweet cherry variety which produces spreading trees, whereas the growth habit of trees of 'Sweetheart' is more upright. '13S2101' does not bear as heavy a crop of fruit as the reference varieties. However, the average fruit weight of '13S2101' is higher than that of '13S2009'. The fruit of '13S2101' differs in shape from the two reference varieties. '13S2101' is elongated cordate in shape, '13S20209' has compressed cordate fruit and 'Sweetheart' fruit are round. The fruit skin colour of '13S2101' is red at maturity, whereas the references have red to dark red-purple fruit. The flesh of '13S2101' is also red and not as dark as the references. '13S2101' is a very late maturity cherry variety. In the Okanagan Valley the fruit is harvested 2 to 4 days later than '13S2009' and about 12 to 16 days after 'Sweetheart'.
Description:
'13S2101' is a sweet cherry variety which has normal type trees that are spreading in habit. The one-year old shoots have little or no anthocyanin colouration and are erect to horizontal in attitude and moderate in thickness. The internodes of the one-year shoots are moderately short, pubescence is absent to very weak and there is a medium to large number of lenticels. The vegetative buds are large and conical in shape and are slightly held out from the shoot. The bud support is moderately large. On the current year's shoots the pubescence is absent to very weak and anthocyanin colouration is weak.
The leaves of '13S2101' are horizontal to slightly downwards in relation to the shoot and are elliptical with a rounded base. The angle of the leaf tip is acute and the shape of the apex is cuspidate to acuminate. The profile of the leaf is concave. '13S2101' has weak pubescence on the lower side of the leaf and the upper side is dark green, moderately glossy with no anthocyanin. The margins are dentate, with medium to deep indentations. Before leaf fall the leaves are yellow green. The petioles of '13S2101' have anthocyanin colouration and usually more than two nectaries which are yellow and orange in colour and kidney shaped.
'13S2101' has sparse to medium flowering density and produces single flowers in clusters. The buds are white. The flower pedicel is moderately thin with no pubescence. '13S2101' has small to medium sized, broad elliptic petals which are free (not touching). '13S2101' produces pollen. The pistil is normal and the ovary has no pubescence.
'13S2101' produces medium to large sized fruit which are elongate to cordate in shape. In lateral view '13S2101' fruit are round with the largest diameter towards the middle. There are a moderate number of light coloured, small dots on the skin. The fruit skin is a wine red colour and the suture has low prominence. The fruit juice of '13S2101' is red in colour and the flesh is red. The fruit is firm and high in sweetness. '13S2101' is moderately juicy. The fruit apex is flat to slightly pointed and susceptibility to rain induced cracking is moderately low. The fruit stalk is long and moderately thick.
The stone of '13S2101' is large and semi-adherent to the flesh. In lateral view it is symmetrical and spherical to elongate in shape. In front view it is ovate and in basal view the stone is round. The keel is moderately developed.
'13S2101' has a moderate precocity of fruit bearing. Leaf bud burst is earlier than the beginning of full flowering. The variety is self-fertile. Time of flowering is late and the fruit matures very late (last week of August in Summerland, British Columbia). Fruit setting of '13S2101' is low to medium and leaf fall occurs late in the season.
Origin & Breeding History: '13S2101' originated from a cross made at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, Summerland, British Columbia in 1982. It resulted from an open pollination of the blossoms of the variety 'Sweetheart'. The variety was selected in 1991 and designated 13S-21-01. Five propagations were made in 1991 on Prunus avium rootstock and planted out in a trial block at the Summerland Research Centre. Evaluation on the selection began upon fruiting. The variety was selected based on maturity date, fruit size, firmness, field splits, fruit shape, skin and flesh colour, fertility, lustre and productivity and precocity.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '13S2101' were conducted by okanagan Plant Improvement Company Ltd. at Clive Sutherland's orchard in Peachland, British Columbia during 2002. The trials consisted of twenty-two trees of the candidate variety and 10 trees of each of the reference varieties. All varieties were grafted onto Mazzard rootstock and planted in 1998. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 15 measurements.
