PLANT: medium to strong vigour, drooping growth habit, weak branching, produces flowers
ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: thin to medium thickness, short internode at middle third of shoot, pubescence present on upper third, medium to many lenticels, medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of apex, weak degree of branching at end of summer
VEGETATIVE BUD OF ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: positioned markedly outwards in relation to shoot, medium to large, acute apex, size of bud support is small to medium
YOUNG SHOOT (DURING RAPID GROWTH): medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of young leaf
PETIOLE: medium length, medium density of pubescence of upper side, medium depth of groove
LEAF: ratio of leaf blade length in relation to petiole length is medium
LEAF BLADE: medium to long, medium to broad, length to width ratio is medium, elliptic shape, acute apex (excluding tip), long to very long tip, obtuse base, only serrate incisions of margin, medium depth of incisions of margin
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): light green, strong degree of glossiness
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): sparse pubescence

Origin & Breeding History: 'STO2', which is typically used as a cherry rootstock, originated from a cross between Prunus cerasus L. and a Prunus hybrid (P. avium L. x P. canescens Bois), in Germany, in 1989. The cross was conducted as part of a breeding program to create cherry rootstocks with improved adaptability. 'STO2' was selected in the summer of 1999 for its improved adaptability to heat and dry conditions when compared to other rootstocks, its weak vegetative growth, higher yield and positive influence on the fertility of the grafted variety.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'STO2' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2012/0022, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt, in Prüfstelle Wurzen, Germany, from 2015 to 2016.
