Origin & Breeding History: 'Areko' originated from a controlled breeding program in Dresden, Germany conducted over many years. In 1991, the cross was conducted by the breeder between the unpatented female parent variety 'Kordia' and unpatented male parent variety 'Regina'. From the resulting progeny, a seedling was selected in 1998. 'Areko' was selected based on its large sized, heart-shaped and firm fruit; fruit ripening time and late flower bloom time, resulting in less frost damage to the flower buds. 'Areko' was first asexually propagated by grafting in March of 1998 in Ahrensburg, Germany.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Areko' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 4068408, purchased from the Variety and Seed Study and Control Group (Groupe d'étude et de contrôle des variétés et des semences) in Beaucouzé, France. The trial was conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Research (Institut national de la recherche agronomique) in Villenave d'Ornon, France, from 2013 to 2017.
