Origin & Breeding History: : 'SPC414' originated from a cross made by Dr. Frank Kappel in 1996 on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Summerland Research and Development Center in Summerland, British Columbia. The cross was an open pollination of the variety Lapins' with an unknown male parent. One of the resulting progeny was selected based on fruit size, self-fertility, productivity, flesh texture and eating quality and designated SPC414' in 2002. Further propagation of the variety was made in 2004 onto Mazzard rootstock.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SPC414' was conducted in 2022 at Summerland Variety Corp. in Summerland British Columbia. The trial included 5 trees of the candidate variety 'SPC414' and 2 trees of the reference variety Bing'. The trees in the trial were bearing fruit and varied in age from 5 to 24 years old with the candidate variety trees grafted onto Mazzard and Gisela6 rootstock and the reference variety trees grafted onto Mazzard rootstock. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements per variety. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
