Summary: 'Amit' chickpea has medium intensity of branching compared to the reference variety, 'CDC Chico', which has weak. The round seeds of 'Amit' are light beige with no ribbing whereas 'CDC Chico' has medium ochre (brownish yellow), round to angular seeds with medium ribbing.
Description:
'Amit' is a mid-season chickpea variety with an erect growth habit with medium intensity of branching. The foliage is medium to dark green with no anthocyanin colouration of the stem. The white flowers of 'Amit' open early to mid-season. The medium green pods bear predominantly two ovules. One month after harvest, the round seeds of 'Amit' are light beige with no ribbing.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Amit' originated from within a Bulgarian land race. Selections began in 1990. Selection criteria included yield, ascochyta blight resistance and seed size. Breeder seed was bulked in the fifth generation.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Amit' were conducted at Qu'appelle, Saskatchewan during the summers of 1999 and 2000. Trials were tested in a 4 replicate randomized block design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 plants each year. Tests and trials results indicated in the table are based on two year averages.
