Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Yotobago' (Tobago Red) and 'CIDZ0092' (Williamsburg Red)

Summary: The petiole of ‘CIDZ0117' is longer than that of both reference varieties. The predominant leaf base shape of ‘CIDZ0117' is truncate and asymmetric while that of ‘Yotobago' is acute and obtuse and that of ‘CIDZ0092' is acute. The flower head of ‘CIDZ0117' has a larger diameter than that of both reference varieties. The ray floret of ‘CIDZ0117' is longer than that of both reference varieties. The outer side of the ray floret of ‘CIDZ0117' is brown red with medium orange pink and light yellow brown tones while that of ‘Yotobago' is brown red with darker brown red overtones and that of ‘CIDZ0092' is medium orange pink fading to white with a dark blue pink overlay.

FLOWER BUD (OUTER SIDE): medium brown purple (RHS 182A) with brown red (RHS 182C) just before opening

RAY FLORET: medium to dense, ligulate type only, attitude of basal part is horizontal, two keels on upper surface, short to medium length corolla tube, flat to weakly convex in cross-section at widest point, flat to weakly revolute rolling of margin at basal quarter to basal half, outer rows straight to reflexing along longitudinal axis with weak curvature at distal quarter if twisting, inner rows incurving along longitudinal axis with weak curvature at distal quarter, medium length to width ratio, emarginate to dentate shaped tip
RAY FLORET (INNER SIDE): one colour, dark purple red (RHS 46A) with lighter dark red (RHS N45B-C) tones, colour is markedly different compared to outer side
RAY FLORET (OUTER SIDE): brown red (RHS 180D) with medium orange pink (RHS N170D) and light yellow brown (RHS 161C) tones

Origin & Breeding History: 'CIDZ0117' originated from a controlled cross conducted between two proprietary breeding lines, the female parent designated ‘F0419', and the male parent designated ‘C0371' conducted in Gilroy, California, USA in October 2017. The resulting seed was sown in July 2018. A single unique seedling was selected in December 2018 based on its flower type and colour, as well as its flowering response time.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘CIDZ0117' was conducted in a greenhouse in St. Catharine's, Ontario in the summer of 2025. Fifty unrooted cuttings were planted into 15 cm pots, with 5 cuttings per pot, 10 pots per variety on June 30, 2025. Plants were pinched on July 14, 2025 prior to short day treatment. Plants were spaced 30 cm apart on July 21, 2025. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on September 10, 2025. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart.
