Varieties used for comparison: 'Harumi' and 'Setoka'
Summary: The anthers on 'Asumi' have a medium amount of viable pollen whereas the anthers on 'Setoka' have a low amount of viable pollen. The apex shape of the fruit for 'Asumi' is flat whereas the apex is sinking for 'Harumi'. 'Asumi' has seed with monogerm embryony whereas both reference varieties have seed with multigerm embryony.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Asumi' originated from a controlled cross-pollination conducted in 1992, at the Institute of Fruit Tree Science - Okitsu Citrus Research Station in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka, Japan, between the variety 'Kankitsu Okitsu 46 Go', as the female parent, and the variety 'Harumi', as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'Asumi' was selected in 2002 for fruit characteristics such as thin segment walls, sweetness, and good taste.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Asumi' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 26542, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Intellectual Property Division, Food Industry Affairs Bureau, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan. The documents related to test and trials were examined by the Plant Variety Protection Office in Japan and granted rights on September 30, 2014.
