Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Benibae' and 'Reiko'

Summary: The plants of 'Mihaya' mature very early whereas the plants of 'Reiko' mature early. The inflorescence of 'Mihaya' is raceme type whereas the inflorescence of 'Benibae' is simple type. The anthers on 'Reiko' have a medium amount of viable pollen whereas the anthers on 'Mihaya' have absent to low amount of viable pollen. The fruit of 'Mihaya' has few seeds whereas the fruit of 'Benibae' has a medium amount of seeds. The seed of 'Mihaya' is monogerm whereas the seed of 'Reiko' is multigerm.

TREE: spreading growth habit, medium vigour, dense shoot density
ONE YEAR OLD SHOOT: short, medium diameter, short internode length, many spines

PETIOLE: long, medium to wide diameter at base, long, long and narrow wing
LEAF BLADE: medium to long, narrow to medium width, medium length to width ratio, spindle shaped, pointed acute apex, acute at base, absent or weak undulation of the margin

FLOWER: mid-season flowering, raceme inflorescence, five petals
PETAL: short, wide, white,
STAMEN: medium amount of filaments, medium amount of viable pollen
STYLE: arched

FRUIT: matures very early in season, oblate globose shape, large diameter to height ratio, flat apex, radial groove at proximal part, medium to heavy
FRUIT SKIN: strong yellowish red, smooth to medium roughness,
OIL GLANDS: few, mixed sizes
FRUIT RIND: thin, light orange albedo,
FRUIT FLESH: dark-orange, not bitter, medium to high sweetness, low acidity
SEEDS: few, monogerm

DISEASE REACTIONS: medium resistance to Canker, Citrus Scab, Melanoses, and Arrowhead

Origin & Breeding History: 'Mihaya' originated from a controlled cross-pollination conducted in 1998, at the Institute of Fruit Tree Science - Kuchinotsu Citrus Research Station, Minami-shimabara, Nagasaki, Japan, between the variety 'Tsunonozomi', as the female parent, and a proprietary variety as a male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'Mihaya' was selected in 2002 for fruit characteristics such as visual appearance, ease of peeling, and good taste.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Mihaya' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 26541, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Intellectual Property Division, Food Industry Affairs Bureau, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan. The documents related to test and trials were examined by the Plant Variety Protection Office in Japan and granted rights on September 30, 2014.
