Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Duchess of Edinburgh'

Summary: 'Evitwo' is a climbing Clematis variety which has wider leaflets than the reference variety 'Duchess of Edinburgh'. The flowers of 'Evitwo' are larger in diameter, with longer sepals, than the flowers of 'Duchess of Edinburgh'. 'Evitwo' also differs from the reference variety in the shape of the base of the sepal, which is type 2 for the candidate and type 3 for 'Duchess of Edinburgh'.

Description:

'Evitwo' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has sparse to medium pubescence on the young shoots, consisting of very long hairs. The leaves are ternate. The blade of the leaflet is medium in length and broad in width. The leaflets are ovate, with a narrow acute apex and an obtuse to rounded base. The leaflet blade margins are entire. The leaflets of 'Evitwo' have three to four lobes and are light to medium green in colour with no rugosity. The lower side of the leaflets is sparsely pubescent.

'Evitwo' bears solitary, double flowers, which are small to medium in diameter and rotate in shape. The flowers face upwards and, in lateral view, are flat to concave. The sepals are overlapping. The flowers of 'Evitwo' have a weak fragrance.

'Evitwo' has short, narrow sepals which are elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are flat to convex. In longitudinal section they are flat. The apex is acute with an acuminate tip and the base is type 2. Sepals of 'Evitwo' have one colour on the upper side, which is white and uniformly distributed. The lower side of the sepal is also white. The margin of the sepals is moderately undulating, and there is weak to medium twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evitwo' have no petaloid stamens. 'Evitwo' has white filaments with cream coloured anthers and a white stigma.

'Evitwo' flowers on both the previous year's and current year's growth. It begins flowering mid-season (about week 25 in St. Thomas, Ontario).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evitwo' originated from a polycross made at the Guernsey Clematis Nursery in the Channel Islands, United Kingdom. The variety was the result of a chance pollination between an unknown seed parent and an unknown pollen parent.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evitwo' were established in the field during the spring of 2002, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring of 2003 at BioFlora, Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. Eight rooted plants of the candidate and reference varieties were received April 20, 2002 and planted into 11.5cm pots and grown in a polyhouse. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 3, 2002. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety during June 2003. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
