Variety used for comparison: 'Ruby Glow'

Summary: 'Evifour' is a climbing clematis variety which flowers on new and old wood. There is weak undulation on the margins of the sepals of 'Evifour', whereas 'Ruby Glow' has no undulation. The main distinguishing characteristic of 'Evifour' is the colour of the flowers which is a deeper violet than 'Ruby Glow' (RHS 86A for 'Evifour' compared with RHS N82A for 'Ruby Glow').

Description:

'Evifour' is a climbing, non-clinging clematis variety which has pale green young leaves. The stem surface is brown and ribbed. The mature leaves are ternate. The terminal leaflet is lanceolate in shape, with an entire margin, acute base and acute to acuminate apex. The number of lobes ranges from none to two. The mature leaflet is medium to dark green and very weakly glaucous, with fine pubescence.

'Evifour' flowers in spring to early summer on old wood and later in the season on new wood. The flowers are single, solitary, erect to semi-erect in attitude and flat in profile. The flower centre is open. 'Evifour' has parallel, thin stamens. The filament has a white base with a pink-red apex and the anthers are red.

'Evifour' has six to eight, thin, smooth sepals which are obovate to elliptic in shape, with entire margins and weak undulation. In cross section the sepals are mostly flat. The sepals of 'Evifour' are overlapping. The sepal apex is acuminate and the tip is moderately to strongly recurved. 'Evifour' has violet coloured sepals with a red-purple central bar.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evifour' originated from a polycross made at Guernsey Clematis Nursery, Guernsey, U.K. Subsequent reproduction was by virus tested cuttings.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evifour' were conducted at Linwell Gardens, Beamsville, Ontario during the spring of 2001. The trial consisted of 8 plants of the candidate variety and 6 plants of the reference variety. All plants were in 25 cm containers and grown in a greenhouse. Observations and measurements were made on 10 parts of either 6 or 8 plants.
