Summary: 'Evisix' is a climbing, non-clinging clematis variety which has bronze-green young leaves, whereas the reference, Clematis integrifolia, has light green new foliage. The colour of the flowers of 'Evisix' is deeper violet compared with C. integrifolia which has lighter, more blue-violet flowers. The sepals of 'Evisix' are strongly recurved at the tip, although the recurvature is not as strong as in C. integrifolia.
Description:
'Evisix' is a climbing, non-clinging clematis variety which has bronze-green young leaves. The stem surface is brown and ribbed. The mature leaves are simple and medium green. The leaves of 'Evisix' are sessile, narrow ovate in shape, with an entire margin, acute to rounded base and acute apex. There is no lobing. The mature leaf has no glaucosity and has very fine pubescence only on the leaf margins.
'Evisix' flowers from summer to fall on new wood. The flowers are single, nodding in attitude, campanulate in profile and arranged in clusters of 3 to 4 flowers. The flower centre is moderately open and single. 'Evisix' has parallel, thin stamens. The filament is dark purple and the anthers are yellow.
'Evisix' has four to six, medium thick, ribbed sepals which are lanceolate to elliptic in shape, with entire margins and medium undulation. The sepals twist as the flowers open. In cross section the sepals are reflexed. The sepals of 'Evisix' are apart and do not touch. The sepal apex is narrow acute and the tip is strongly recurved. 'Evisix' has violet-blue coloured sepals and no secondary colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Evisix' originated from a polycross made at Guernsey Clematis Nursery, Guernsey, U.K. Subsequent reproduction was by virus tested cuttings.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evisix' were conducted at Linwell Gardens, Beamsville, Ontario during the spring of 2001. The trial consisted of 7 plants of the candidate variety and reference variety. All plants were in 25 cm containers and grown in a greenhouse. Observations and measurements were made on 10 parts of 7 plants.
