Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Nelly Moser'

Summary: 'Evione' is a climbing Clematis variety which has longer leaflets than 'Nelly Moser'. The flowers of 'Evione' differ in colour from the reference. The main colour of the upper side of the sepals of 'Evione' is more pinkish or reddish violet than 'Nelly Moser' which has a blue-violet main colour. The secondary colour on the lower side of the sepals of 'Evione' is purplish red, whereas it is yellowish white in the reference variety. The anthers of 'Evione' are creamy yellow, compared with 'Nelly Moser' which has purple anthers.

Description:

'Evione' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has very sparse pubescence on the young shoots, consisting of very long hairs. The leaves are ternate. The blade of the leaflet is medium to long and medium in width. The leaflets are narrowly ovate, with an acuminate apex and an acute base. The leaflet blade margins are entire. The leaflets of 'Evione' may have lobing with two to four lobes and are medium green in colour with no rugosity. The lower side of the leaflets is sparsely pubescent.

'Evione' bears solitary, single flowers, which are large in diameter and rotate in shape. The flowers face upwards and, in lateral view, are flat. There are 6 to 8 sepals, which are touching to overlapping. The flowers of 'Evione' have a strong fragrance.

'Evione' has sepals which are medium in length and width, elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are flat. In longitudinal section they are flat to slightly reflexed. The apex is acute with an acuminate tip and the base is type 2. Sepals of 'Evione' have two colours on the upper side. The main colour is violet, and the central bar is red-purple. The lower side of the sepal is purple with a reddish purple central bar. The margin of the sepals is weakly undulating, and there is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evione' have no petaloid stamens. 'Evione' has violet-pink filaments with creamy yellow coloured anthers and a white stigma.

'Evione' flowers on both the previous year's and current year's growth. It begins flowering early to mid-season (about week 24 in St. Thomas, Ontario).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evione' originated from a cross in 1989 between two unnamed seedlings at the Domarie Vineries in Guernsey. The resulting seeds were planted in a controlled environment. Selection of the seedling known as 'Evione' occurred in 1990.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evione' were established in the field during the spring of 2002, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring of 2003 at BioFlora, Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. Eight rooted plants of the candidate and reference varieties were received April 20, 2002 and planted into 11.5cm pots and grown in a polyhouse. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 3, 2002. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety during June 2003. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
