Summary: 'Evipo038' has a ovate shaped leaf while in 'Multi-Blue' it is lanceolate. The sepal of 'Evipo038' is narrower than in 'Multi-Blue'. The sepals of 'Evipo038' are lighter in colour compared to 'Multi-Blue'.

Description:

'Evipo038' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has medium pubescence on the young shoots, consisting of long hairs. The leaves are ternate, usually with three leaflets. The leaves are ovate in shape, with an acuminate apex and a rounded base. The leaf blade margins are entire. The leaves of 'Evipo038' may be lobed, having two or more lobes with deep sinuses between the lobes. The leaves are light green in colour with absent or very weak rugosity.

'Evipo038' bears solitary, single flowers, which are rotate in shape and face upwards and outwards. In lateral view, the flowers are flat. There are six to eight sepals, which are free in arrangement. The flowers of 'Evipo038' have a weakly present fragrance.

'Evipo038' has sepals which are elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are concave. In longitudinal section they are flat to moderately reflexed. The sepal apex is acuminate and the base is type 2. Sepals of 'Evipo038' are violet to dark violet in colour on the upper side, and violet to blue-violet on the lower side. The margin of the sepals has weak undulation, and there is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evipo038' have petaloid stamens.

'Evipo038' flowers on both the previous year's and current year's growth. It begins flowering early in the season.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evipo038' is a sport of the clematis variety 'H. F. Young' and was selected at Anjo Clematis Garden, Aichi Prefecture, Japan in May of 1994.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evipo038' were established in the field during the spring of 2003, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring/summer of 2004 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Ten bare root liners of the candidate and reference varieties were received January 10, 2003 and planted into 11cm pots and grown in a poly house. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 17, 2003. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
