Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'LH176'

Summary: The plants of '86ISI27' are shorter than those of 'LH176'. The plants of '86ISI27' have medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the glume ring and glume tip whereas it is absent in 'LH176'. The glume body of '86ISI27' has medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas 'LH176' has none. The anthers of '86ISI27' have medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration compared to those of 'LH176' which has medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the silks of '86ISI27' is weak to medium whereas it is absent in 'LH176'.

Description:

'86ISI27' is an inbred corn variety. At inflorescence emergence, the angle of the leaf with the stalk is semi-erect (30 to 40 degrees). After male flowering, the leaf blade is medium to wide with no anthocyanin of the sheath. There are few leaves per stem (11 to 13) with no anthocyanin colouration of the stem nodes and internodes.

Tassel emergence and male flowering of '86ISI27' is early to mid-season. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the ring at the base and the tips of the glumes is medium with medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin of the glume body. The anthers have strong anthocyanin colouration and male sterility is absent. At the end of male flowering, the main axis above the lowest side branch and above the upper side branch is long. There is medium density of the branches on the main axis of the tassel. There are few semi-erect lateral branches (3 to 10) with a medium size angle (30 to 60 degrees) between the main axis and the lateral branches .

The silks have weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration one to two days after emergence and are pink in colour two to three days after emergence. The shank or peduncle is medium in length.

The percentage of plants with ear wings is low to very low. The ear of '86ISI27' is cylindrical-conical in shape with a medium to large diameter in the middle-third of the ear (including kernels) and a medium diameter at mid-cob (excluding kernels). There are medium (13 or 14) to many (15 or 16) rows of kernels. Anthocyanin colouration of cob glumes is present. The wedge-shaped kernels of '86ISI27' are dent type and yellow-orange in colour on the dorsal side. The kernel tip is yellow in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: '86ISI27' was derived from the cross of the inbred lines 'IBC15' and '3IBZ2' made in the summer of 1988. Seed was grown and selfed from 1989 to 1994 with the final selection made and bulked in summer 1994. Selection criteria included greater combining ability, improved stalk and root strength and test weight.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '86ISI27' were conducted at London, Ontario in 2000 and 2001. The trials consisted of two replicates with two rows per replicate. The rows were 4.5 meters long with approximately 22 plants per row.
