Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: '3AZA1' and '87DIA4'
Summary: The plants of 'I161538' are taller than those of both reference varieties. The tassels of 'I161538' have very few lateral branches with large angles between the main axis and lateral branches whereas both reference varieties have few lateral branches with medium angles between the main axis and lateral branches. The anthers of 'I161538' are weak in intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas it is absent to very weak in '3AZA1' and strong in '87DIA4'.
Description:
'I161538' is an inbred corn variety. At inflorescence emergence, the angle of the leaf with the stalk is semi-erect (30-40). After male flowering, the leaf blade is medium in width with no anthocyanin colouration of the sheath. There are few leaves per stem (11-13) with no anthocyanin colouration of the stem nodes and internodes.
Tassel emergence and male flowering of 'I161538' is mid-season. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the ring at the base and the tips of the glumes is absent or very weak and weak in intensity on the glume bodies and anthers. At the end of male flowering, the main axis above the lowest side branch and above the upper side branch is long. Density of the branches on the main axis of the tassel is intermediate. There are very few (0-3) horizontal lateral branches with a large angle (greater than 60 degrees) between the main axis and the lateral branches.
The silks have no anthocyanin colouration one to two days after emergence and are pink two to three days after emergence. The shank or peduncle is long.
The percentage of plants with ear wings is medium to high. The ear of 'I161538' is cylindrical-conical in shape with a small diameter in the middle-third of the ear including and excluding kernels. There are few rows (10-12) of kernels. Anthocyanin colouration of cob glumes is present. The kidney-shaped kernels of 'I161538' are a flint/dent type and yellow-orange in colour on the dorsal side. The kernel tip is yellow.
Origin & Breeding History: 'I161538' was derived from the cross '87DIA4' x '3AZA1' made in the winter of 1995/96. Seed was grown ear-to-row from 1998 to 2000. In the summer of 1999, corn inbred 'I161538' was coded and reproduced by self-pollination. Selection criteria included improved plant health, improved grain quality and test weight, greater vigour and ear length and greater combining ability.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'I161538' were conducted at Glanworth, Ontario in 2003 and 2004. The trials consisted of two replicates with two rows per replicate. The rows were 5.5 metres long, spaced 23 cm apart. Final plant population was 46 plants per plot.
