Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'PH13JD'
Summary: The base of the glume on the tassel of 'PH2T5B' has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the base of the glume of 'PH13JD' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The anthers of the tassel of 'PH2T5B' have absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the anthers of 'PH13JD' have strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The silk for 'PH2T5B' emerge mid season whereas the silk for 'PH13JD' emerge very late. The plants of 'PH2T5B are shorter than those of 'PH13JD'. The ear of 'PH2T5B' is longer than the ear of 'PH13JD'. The ear of 'PH2T5B' has a smaller diameter than the ear of 'PH13JD'. The primary ear on the stem of 'PH2T5B' is located lower on the stem than it is for 'PH13JD'.
Description:
PLANT: inbred yellow variety, none with ear wings, small to medium ratio of height of insertion of peduncle of upper ear to plant height
STEM: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on brace roots
TASSEL: anthesis occurs mid to late season, medium angle between main axis and lateral branches, moderately dense spikelets, long main axis above lowest lateral branch, medium to long main axis above highest lateral branch
LATERAL BRANCHES: medium number of primary lateral branches on main axis of tassel, slightly recurved
GLUME: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at base, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration at apex and middle
ANTHER: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
EAR: mid season silk emergence, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of silks, medium length husk (extends one quarter length of ear above tip), conico-cylindrical shape, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on glumes of cob
KERNEL: dent-like type, yellow on top and dorsal side
Origin & Breeding History: 'PH2T5B' was developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. from a cross between proprietary inbred lines made in 2008 in Mankato, Minnesota, USA using a double haploid plant breeding method. In 2009, the F1 generation underwent a haploidization process. The haploids were doubled, self-pollinated and ears were selected, also in 2009. From 2010 to 2012, the subsequent D1 to D3 generations were self-pollinated and harvested in bulk. 'PH2T5B' was selected in 2013 based on yield per se, yield in hybrid combination, tassel size, pollen production, stalk lodging resistance, late season plant health, grain quality, as well as disease and insect resistance. Yield trials were grown in Algona, Iowa, USA and other Pioneer research locations in Canada and the USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PH2T5B' was conducted in Woodstock, Ontario during the 2018 growing season. The trial was planted in a complete randomized design with 3 replicates. Plots consisted of one row 3 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot contained approximately 20 plants resulting in a total of 50 to 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201800252, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
