Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'PHHEN'

Summary: The angle between the main axis and the lateral branches on the tassel of 'PH2TRS' is large whereas the angle on the tassel of 'PHHEN' is very small. The lateral branches on the tassel of 'PH2TRS' are moderately recurved whereas the lateral branches of 'PHHEN' are straight. The brace roots on the stem of 'PH2TRS' have strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the brace roots for 'PHHEN' have weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'PH2TRS' are shorter than the plants of 'PHHEN'. The ratio of height of insertion of the peduncle of the upper ear to the plant height is small to medium for 'PH2TRS' whereas it is very small for 'PHHEN'. The glumes of the cob of 'PH2TRS' have absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the glumes for 'PHHEN' have very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The primary ear on the stem of 'PH2TRS' is located lower on the stem than it is for 'PHHEN'.

Description:

PLANT: inbred yellow variety, low to medium percentage of plants with medium length ear wings, small to medium ratio of height of insertion of peduncle of upper ear to plant height
STEM: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on brace roots

TASSEL: anthesis occurs very early to early season, large angle between main axis and lateral branches, moderately dense spikelets, medium to long main axis above lowest lateral branch, medium length of main axis above highest lateral branch
LATERAL BRANCHES: medium number of primary lateral branches on main axis of tassel, moderately recurved
GLUME: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration throughout
ANTHER: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

EAR: very early to early season silk emergence, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of silks, short husk (level with tip), conico-cylindrical shape, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on glumes of cob
KERNEL: dent-like type, yellow orange on top side, red orange on dorsal side

Origin & Breeding History: 'PH2TRS' was developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. from a cross between proprietary inbred lines made in 2008 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA using a double haploid plant breeding method. In 2009, the F1 generation underwent a haploidization process. The haploids were doubled, self-pollinated and ears were selected, also in 2009. In 2010, 2012 and 2014, the subsequent D1 to D3 generations were self-pollinated and harvested in bulk. 'PH2TRS' was selected in 2014 based on yield per se, yield in hybrid combination, tassel size, pollen production, stalk lodging resistance, late season plant health, grain quality, as well as disease and insect resistance. Yield trials were grown in St. Polycarpe, Quebec and other Pioneer research locations in Canada and the USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PH2TRS' was conducted in Woodstock, Ontario during the 2018 growing season. The trial was planted in a complete randomized design with 3 replicates. Plots consisted of one row 3 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot contained approximately 20 plants resulting in a total of 50 to 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201800276, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
