Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'PH5FW'
Summary: The base of the glumes on the tassel of 'PHCBM' have absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration where as the base of the glumes for 'PH5FW' have strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The anthers on the tassel of 'PHCBM' have strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the anthers for 'PH5FW' have weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The lateral branches on the tassel of 'PHCBM' are straight whereas the lateral branches of 'PH5FW' are moderately recurved. The ratio of height of insertion of the peduncle of the upper ear to the plant height for 'PHCBM' is large to very large whereas the ratio for 'PH5FW' is very small. The ear of 'PHCBM' has a smaller diameter than the ear of 'PH5FW'. The primary ear on the stem of 'PHCBM' is located lower on the stem than it is for 'PH5FW'.
Description:
PLANT: inbred yellow variety, very low percentage of plants with short ear wings, large to very large ratio of height of insertion of peduncle of upper ear to plant height
STEM: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on brace roots
TASSEL: anthesis occurs very early to early season, small angle between main axis and lateral branches, moderately dense spikelets, medium length main axis above lowest lateral branch, short main axis above highest lateral branch
LATERAL BRANCHES: medium number of primary lateral branches on main axis of tassel, straight
GLUME: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at base, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at middle and apex
ANTHER: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
EAR: very early to early season silk emergence, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of silks, short husk (level with tip), conico-cylindrical shape, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on glumes of cob
KERNEL: flint type, yellow orange on top and dorsal side
Origin & Breeding History: 'PHCBM' was developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. from a cross between proprietary inbred lines made in 1996 in Oucques, France using the pedigree plant breeding method. In 1997, the F1 generation was planted, self-pollinated and harvested in bulk. From 1998 to 2000, the subsequent F2 to F6 generations were self-pollinated and ears were selected. 'PHCBM' was selected in 2000 based on yield per se, yield in hybrid combination, tassel size, pollen production, time of maturity, as well as disease and insect resistance. The first introduction into Canadian breeding locations was made in 2004. Yield trials were grown in Carman, Manitoba and other Pioneer research locations in Canada and the USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PHCBM' was conducted in Woodstock, Ontario during the 2018 growing season. The trial was planted in a complete randomized design with 3 replicates. Plots consisted of one row 3 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot contained approximately 20 plants resulting in a total of 50 to 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201800287, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
