Summary: Silk emergence for ‘PH48YS' occurs mid-season whereas that for ‘PH1MC9' occurs late in the season. The plants of ‘PH48YS' are taller than those of ‘PH1MC9'. The leaf blade of ‘PH48YS' is wider than that of ‘PH1MC9'. The main axis above the highest lateral branch for ‘PH48YS' is a medium length whereas that of ‘PH1MC9' is short. The ear of ‘PH48YS' is longer than that of ‘PH1MC9'.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘PH48YS' was developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. using a double haploid plant breeding method. The variety resulted from a cross between two inbred lines, designated ‘PH1MC9' and ‘PH1W17', conducted in Wilmar, Minnesota, USA in 2010. The F1 generation underwent a haploidization process with subsequent chromosome doubling and selfing. Resulting DH1 lines were self pollinated and harvested in bulk. From 2010 to 2013, the DH2 to DH4 lines were self pollinated with subsequent ear selections, respectively. ‘PH48YS' was selected in 2013 based on tassel size, pollen production, germination ability, stalk lodging resistance, late season plant health, yield in hybrid combination, grain quality, as well as disease and insect resistance. Breeder seed was established at the DH5 in 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'PH48YS' were conducted in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons. The trials were planted in a RCB design with 3 replicates. Each replicate consisted of one 3 metre long row with 76 cm between the rows. With approximately 20 plants per row, there was a total 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's T-tests.
