Summary: Including the tassel, the plants of ‘1PTJY93' are taller than those of ‘PH24DJ'. The silks of ‘1PTJY93' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those of ‘PH24DJ' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The ear of ‘1PTJY93' is shorter than that of ‘PH24DJ'. Including the kernels, the ear of ‘1PTJY93' has a larger diameter than that of ‘PH24DJ'.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘1PTJY93' originated from a cross conducted in 2016 by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. in Janesville, Wisconsin, USA, between the proprietary inbred lines ‘PH24DJ' and ‘PH471F'. The resulting F1 plants were self-pollinated, and ear selections were made based on genetic analysis predicting disease and insect resistance, as well as agronomic performance. The F2 generation was backcrossed, followed by selfing and ear-to-row pedigree selections from the BC2F1 through the BC1F4 generations. ‘1PTJY93' was identified at the BC1F5 generation in 2018 based on its tassel size, pollen production, germination ability, stalk lodging resistance, late-season plant health, performance in hybrid combinations, grain quality, and resistance to diseases and insects. Breeder seed was established at the BC2F6 generation in 2018.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘1PTJY93' was conducted in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec during the 2023 growing season. The trial was planted in a RCB design with 3 replicates. Each replicate consisted of one 3 metre long row with 76 cm between the rows. With approximately 20 plants per row, there was a total of 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's T-tests. Results were supported by the official technical examination report number 202300230, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
