Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'PH42RW'
Summary: Including the tassels, the plants of 1PGJC85' are shorter than those of PH42RW'. The ratio of the height of the insertion of the peduncle of the upper ear to the plant height for 1PGJC85' is medium whereas that of PH42RW' is small. The tassel of 1PGJC85' has moderately sparse spikelets whereas that of PH42RW' has a medium density of spikelets. The angle between the main axis and the lateral branches on the tassel of 1PGJC85' is small whereas that of PH42RW' is medium sized. The lateral branches on the tassel of 1PGJC85' are slightly recurved whereas those of PH42RW' are moderately recurved. The husks of 1PGJC85' are a medium length (extend one quarter the length of the ear above the tip) whereas those of PH42RW' are short (level with the tip). The silks on the ear of 1PGJC85' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those of PH42RW' have a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The ear of 1PGJC85' is longer than that of PH42RW'. Including the kernels, the ear of 1PGJC85' has a larger diameter than that of PH42RW'. The kernel of 1PGJC85' is dent-like type whereas that of PH42RW' is flint type.
Description:
PLANT: inbred yellow variety, medium ratio of height of insertion of peduncle of upper ear to plant height, anthesis occurs late in season, silk emergence occurs mid-season
STEM: absent or very slight degree of zig-zag, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on brace roots
LEAF BLADE (JUST ABOVE UPPER EAR): intermediate degree of undulation of margin, small angle with stem, straight to slightly recurved
TASSEL: few primary lateral branches, moderately sparse spikelets on middle third of main branch, medium length of main axis above lowest lateral branch, medium length of main axis above highest lateral branch
LATERAL BRANCHES: slightly recurved, small angle with main axis, short
GLUME: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at base, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration excluding the base
ANTHER (ON MIDDLE THIRD OF MAIN BRANCH OF TASSEL): very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
EAR: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of silks, medium length husk (extends one quarter length of ear above tip), conico-cylindrical shape, medium number of rows of grain, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on glumes of cob
KERNEL: dent-like type, yellow on top, yellow orange on dorsal side
Origin & Breeding History: 1PGJC85' was developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. using a double haploid plant breeding method. The variety resulted from a cross between two proprietary inbred lines, conducted in Willmar, Minnesota, USA in 2014. The F1 generation underwent haploidization, followed by chromosome doubling. Resulting DH1 lines were self pollinated and harvested in bulk for advancement and observations in Willmar, Minnesota, USA; Oahu, Hawaii, USA; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and Ithaca, Michigan, USA. 1PGJC85' was selected in 2018 in Columbia, Wisconsin, USA based on tassel size, pollen production, germination ability, stalk lodging resistance, late season plant health, yield in hybrid combination, grain quality, as well as disease and insect resistance. Breeder seed was established from the F1DH in 2018.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 1PGJC85' was conducted in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec during the 2024 growing season. The trial was planted in a RCB design with 3 replicates. Each replicate consisted of one 3 metre long row with 76 cm between the rows. With approximately 20 plants per row, there was a total of 60 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's T-tests. Results were supported by the official technical examination report number 202400328, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
