Summary: 'Red Fountain' is a taller wider plant with less leaves than 'Red Star'. The leaves of 'Red Fountain' are larger and droop more than 'Red Star'. 'Red Fountain' has a slightly darker brown leaf colour than 'Red Star'.
Description:
'Red Fountain' is a shrub type multi stem cordyline variety with a clumping growth habit and dense foliage. The thin stem has a corky character with leaf coverage from the base to the top. The leaf attitude is very drooping. The lower side of the leaf has a midrib. The leaf blade has venation on the upper side of the leaf which is parallel, a smooth margin and the upper third being slightly curved. The upper side of the leaf is a dark brown colour with a brown purplebanded pattern.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Red Fountain' was bred in 1984 at Taranaki, New Zealand. It originated from a cross-pollination by hand of a cordyline likely to have been a cross between Cordyline banksii and Cordyline australis, with pollen from Cordyline pumilo. The resulting seeds were planted out and the variety was selected with desirable ornamental characteristics regarding foliage colour.
Tests & Trials: Test and trials were conducted at Westcan Greenhouses Ltd. in Langley, British Columbia during the summer of 2005. 25 plants of each variety were each individually grown in 19 cm plastic pots in a greenhouse. Pots were spaced apart 30 cm on centre.
