Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'LEL C03'

Summary: The plants of 'Sprilecpink' have suckering while those of 'LEL C03' do not. The stems of 'Sprilecpink' have branching while those of 'LEL C03' do not. The secondary colour on the upper side of the leaves of 'Sprilecpink' is brown purple whereas that of 'LEL C03' is dark pink red. The main colour on the lower side of the leaves of 'Sprilecpink' is grey whereas that of 'LEL C03' is dark brown. The top half of the leaf of 'Sprilecpink' is semi-weeping whereas that of 'LEL C03' is semi-erect.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sprilecpink' originated as a naturally-occurring whole plant mutation of the Cordyline banksii cultivar CAZ50. The new variety was discovered by the breeder Professor Jianping Chen at the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. In August 2003, 'Sprilecpink' was selected based on its leaf colour and strong leaf variegation. Asexual propagation by micropropagation techniques was first conducted in Zhejiang, China in August 2005.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Sprilecpink' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2006/339, purchased from the Plant Breeders' Rights Office in Woden, Australia. The trial was conducted in Carabooda, Western Australia in 2009. The colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
