Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Ben Lear', 'NJS98-23' and 'NJS98-35'
Summary: The time of harvest maturity of 'CNJ95-20-20' is very early to early whereas it is early for the reference varieties. The berry size of 'CNJ95-20-20' is small whereas it is medium large to large for 'NJS98-23' and medium to medium large for 'NJS98-35'. The surface of the berries of 'CNJ95-20-20' is smooth whereas that of 'NJS98-23' is of medium unevenness (rugose at calyx end) and of very slight unevenness (ribbing) for 'NJS98-35'. The 50 berry weight of 'CNJ95-20-20' is less than that of 'NJS98-23' and 'NJS98-35'. The berry colour through the entire fruit canopy of 'CNJ95-20-20' is uniform whereas it is not uniform for 'Ben Lear' and is partially not uniform for 'NJS98-35'. After fruit harvest, the density of upright shoots of 'CNJ95-20-20' is medium whereas it is dense for 'NJS98-35'. The tendency to develop multiple buds on the uprights shoots of 'CNJ95-20-20' is weak whereas it is medium for 'NJS98-35'. The upright shoots of 'CNJ95-20-20' are longer than those of 'NJS98-23'.
Description:
YOUNG PLANT (at end of establishment period): dense vegetative growth
PLANT: early flowering, very early to early harvest maturity
UPRIGHT SHOOTS (AFTER HARVEST): medium length, medium density, weak tendency to produce multiple buds
LEAF: elliptic shape, obtuse to rounded apex, rounded base, entire margin, dark green on upper surface and medium green on lower surface (just after flowering)
FRUIT: elliptic to oblate in longitudinal cross-section, small, low to medium length/width ratio, fruit surface smooth, strong glaucosity, dark red to purple red, rounded to moderately angular locules in cross-section, colour uniform throughout the entire fruit canopy, very high total anthocyanin (TAcy) content
Origin & Breeding History: 'CNJ95-20-20' resulted from the cross made in 1995 at Rutgers University, Chatsworth, New Jersey with 'Stevens' as the seed parent and 'NJS98-37' as the pollen parent. A single plant was initially selected from 26 seedlings for its early, uniform dark fruit colour. In 2003, 'CNJ95-20-20' was planted in a replicated variety trial for additional evaluation. Final selection and advancement of 'CNJ95-20-20' was based on total anthocyanin content of the fruit, fruit shape and fruit sorting and packing ability.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were planted in Burnaby, British Columbia in June 2011 using virus negative one inch plugs with 2 to 3 nodes per cutting. Approximately 100 rooted cuttings of each variety were planted at a density of approximately 1 plant per 9 decimeters squared resulting in a plot size of 3.05 meters by 3.35 meters with an approximate density of 30 to 40 uprights per decimeter squared having arisen from stolons rooted along multiple points within the plot. There were 4 replicates per variety arranged in a Latin Square design. There were 60 cm pathways between each replicate of each variety in the test. Observations of each variety were taken from the plots in the fall of 2016. Berry weights were based on 8 measurements per variety. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety.
