Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Decorette'

Summary: 'Gallery Leonardo' produces a shorter plant than 'Decorette'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration in the stem is weaker in 'Gallery Leonardo' than in 'Decorette'. 'Gallery Leonardo' has no anthocyanin colouration in the petiole while 'Decorette' does. 'Gallery Leonardo' has a smaller flower diameter than 'Decorette'. The flower colour of 'Gallery Leonardo' is light salmon while it is an apricot colour in 'Decorette'. 'Gallery Leonardo' has smaller ray florets than 'Decorette'. The length of the peduncle from the base of the flower to the top pair of leaves shorter in 'Gallery Leonardo' than in 'Decorette'. 'Gallery Leonardo' has more involucral bracts than 'Decorette'.

Description:

'Gallery Leonardo' has an upright growth habit. The stem is medium green in colour and has weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration present. The stem is straight and has absent or very sparse pubescence. The leaf is a compound type. The terminal leaflets are ovate to elliptic in shape with dentate margins. The leaf has more of a supple texture, weak glaucosity and no pubescence on the upper surface. The leaves are medium green in colour. The petiole has no wings present and there is no anthocyanin colouration.

The flowers are a decorative type. They are located above the foliage and are angled 30 to 60 degrees with the stem. The flowers are bicoloured light salmon and yellow. The ray florets have no markings and pointed to notched tips. There is a disc present which is yellow in colour. The involucral bracts are elliptic in shape and yellowish to light green in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Gallery Leonardo' was a selection made in 1995 from a mutation observed in Dahlia 'Decorette'. Selection criteria were plant height, early flowering & longevity, plant health, compact branching plants, and vibrant flower colour. It is maintained in the vegetative state, and reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Lisse, The Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Gallery Leonardo' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots, under partial shade conditions. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
