Summary: 'Gallery Monet' produces a shorter plant than 'Aspen'. The leaves of 'Gallery Monet' are smaller than 'Aspen'. 'Gallery Monet' has a dark green leaf colour while 'Aspen' has a light to medium green leaf colour. The flower diameter and depth is smaller in 'Gallery Monet' than in 'Aspen'. 'Gallery Monet' has an angle of the flower to the stem of less than 30 degrees, while in 'Aspen' it is greater than 60 degrees. There are violet coloured markings along the veins of the ray floret in 'Gallery Monet' while 'Aspen' has no markings on the ray florets. 'Gallery Monet' has smaller ray florets than 'Aspen'. The ray florets of 'Gallery Monet' are flat while in 'Aspen' the ray florets are twisted. 'Gallery Monet' has a shorter length of peduncle from the base of the flower to the top pair of leaves than 'Aspen'.
Description:
'Gallery Monet' has an upright growth habit. The stem is medium green in colour and has no anthocyanin present. The stem is straight in shape with absent or very sparse pubescence. The leaf type is compound. The terminal leaflets are ovate to elliptic in shape with dentate margins. The leaf has more of a supple texture, weak glaucosity and absent or very sparse pubescence on the upper surface. The leaves are dark green in colour. The petiole has no wings present and there is no anthocyanin.
The flowers are a decorative type. They are located above the foliage and are angled less than 30 degrees with the stem. The flowers are white in colour and have no secondary colour. The ray florets have violet striped markings along the veins and blunt tips. There is a yellow disc present. The involucral bracts are elliptical in shape and yellowish to light green in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Gallery Monet' was a selection made in 1996 from a seedling population that resulted from a cross pollination between Dahlia 'Art Deco' as the female parent and an unnamed open pollinated seedling selection of Dahlia. Selection criteria were plant height, early flowering and longevity, plant health, compact branching plants, and vibrant flower colour. It is maintained in the vegetative state, and reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Lisse, The Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Gallery Monet' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario, during the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots, under partial shade conditions. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
