Variety used for comparison: 'Berliner Kleene'
Summary: 'Gallery Rembrandt' produces a shorter plant than 'Berliner Kleene'. There is no anthocyanin colouration in the stem of 'Gallery Rembrandt' while there is in 'Berliner Kleene'. 'Gallery Rembrandt' has a compound leaf type while 'Berliner Kleene' has a simple leaf type. The leaves are smaller in 'Gallery Rembrandt' than in 'Berliner Kleene'. 'Gallery Rembrandt' has a smaller flower diameter than 'Berliner Kleene'. The angle of the flower to the stem is greater in 'Gallery Rembrandt' than 'Berliner Kleene'. 'Gallery Rembrandt' has a bicoloured flower while 'Berliner Kleene' a monocoloured flower. The flower colour of 'Gallery Rembrandt' is a blue pink while 'Berliner Kleene' has a orange red flower colour. 'Gallery Rembrandt' has smaller ray florets than 'Berliner Kleene'. There is a disc floret present in 'Gallery Rembrandt' but not in 'Berliner Kleene'. 'Gallery Rembrandt' has a shorter peduncle from the base of the flower to the top pair of leaves than 'Berliner Kleene'. The number of involucral bracts is greater in 'Gallery Rembrandt' than 'Berliner Kleene'.
Description:
'Gallery Rembrandt' has an upright growth habit. The stem is medium green in colour and has no anthocyanin present. The stem is straight and has absent or very sparse pubescence. The terminal leaflets are elliptic in shape with dentate margins. There is weak glaucosity and absent to very sparse pubescence on the upper surface of the leaf. The leaves are medium green in colour. The petiole has no wings present and no anthocyanin colouration.
The flowers are a decorative type. They are located above the foliage and are angled greater than 30 degrees with the stem. The flowers are bicoloured, purple with a yellow to white base. The ray florets have no markings and blunt tips. There is a disc present. The involucral bracts are elliptical in shape and yellowish to light-green in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Gallery Rembrandt' was a selection made in 1995 from a seedling population from the cross pollination of two unnamed open pollinated Dahlia seedling selections. Selection criteria were plant height, early flowering and longevity, plant health, vibrant flower colour and compact branching plants. It is maintained in the vegetative state, and reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Lisse, The Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Gallery Rembrandt' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots, under partial shade conditions. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
