Summary: 'Kiemar' has taller plants with shorter leaves than 'Snowcap'. The flowers of 'Kiemar' are smaller in diameter with shorter ray florets and smaller discs than those of 'Snowcap'.
Description:
'Kiemar' is a perennial type Shasta daisy which is propagated vegetatively. The plants have a narrow upright to upright bushy growth habit and moderate degree of branching. The stems are dark green with absent to very sparse pubescence. The leaves are simple type and arranged alternately along the stem. The leaf blade is linear to lanceolate in shape with an acute apex and attenuate base. The leaf blade margin is dentate. The colour of the leaf blade is dark green with no variegation. There is no petiole.
'Kiemar' begins flowering early and flowers almost continuously for a long period of time. The flower is a head type inflorescence and located at a terminal position on the stem. The attitude of the flowers is erect. Each flower has a medium number of ray florets, most of which are straight along their longitudinal axis. The ray florets are white and the disc florets are yellow orange.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Kiemar' originated from a cross between two unidentified seedling selections of Leucanthemum x superbum (Bergmans ex J.W. Ingram) D.H. Kent. The cross was conducted by the breeder in 1993 in Steenbergen, The Netherlands. 'Kiemar' was selected from the resulting seedling population in 1995 based on its compact plant growth habit and early flowering.
Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kiemar' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots spaced 30 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
