Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Blue Bird'

Summary: 'West End Blue' has a shorter plant height than 'Blue Bird'. 'West End Blue' has stronger anthocyanin colouration in the stem and no stem glaucosity while 'Blue Bird' has weak to medium glaucosity. 'West End Blue' has deeper margin incisions and shorter petioles than 'Blue Bird'. 'West End Blue' has a shorter inflorescence and lighter blue sepal colour than 'Blue Bird'.

Description:

'West End Blue' is a vegetatively propagated, perennial delphinium variety. The growth habit is upright bushy and there is a sparse degree of branching. The stem is light green in colour with medium anthocyanin colouration. The stem has no glaucosity and has sparse pubescence. The stems are medium in thickness and smooth in shape.

The leaves are arranged in a rosette with stem leaves alternate in arrangement. The leaves are simple and reniform in shape. the apex is acute and the base is sagittate. The leaf margin is incised. The leaf blade has very sparse pubescence on the upper side and sparse pubescence on the lower side. There is no glaucosity on the upper side. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour and the lower side is light green. There is no variegation. The leaf petiole has no anthocyanin colouration.

'West End Blue' flowers more than once with the first flowering occurring early and the second flowering occurring mid to late season. 'West End Blue' has a raceme type inflorescence which is both axillary and terminal in position. The inflorescence has an erect attitude. 'West End Blue' has blue sepals and white and blue petals.

Origin & Breeding History: 'West End Blue' was selected from a seed bed of hybrid Delphinium seedlings that were produced from various crosses of unidentified Delphinium seedling selections. The selection was made in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands in 1994.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'West End Blue' were conducted in the summer of 2001 at Oxford Station, Ontario. The trials consisted of 10 plants of each variety, field planted in rows that were 1 metre apart with plants 0.40m apart within the row.
