Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Sunjodiblupi' (Sundiascia Upright Bright Pink) and 'Balwinwite' (Romeo White)

Summary: The plants of 'Sunjodi 042' have an upright growth habit whereas the plants of 'Balwinwite' have a semi-upright growth habit. 'Sunjodi 042' has taller plants than 'Balwinwite'. The leaf of 'Sunjodi 042' is larger than the leaf of 'Balwinwite'. The corolla of 'Sunjodi 042' is smaller than the corolla of both reference varieties. The main colour of the corolla for 'Sunjodi 042' is white whereas the main colour for 'Sunjodiblupi' is purple red. 'Sunjodi 042' has an inward pointing spur whereas 'Balwinwite' has an outward pointing spur.

PLANT: upright growth habit, medium to dense
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration below inflorescence

LEAF BLADE: acute apex, cordate base, medium glossiness on upper side, no variegation, medium green on upper side

INFLORESCENCE: medium density
PEDICEL: medium angle relative to peduncle, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: white (RHS NN155B) on inner side
LATERAL COROLLA LOBES: strong reflexing
LOWER COROLLA LOBE: longer than broad, medium degree of incurving, weak undulation of margin
COROLLA WINDOW: light yellow
COROLLA SPURS: short, white (RHS NN155D with blush of 61D), strong curvature, pointing inwards
COROLLA THROAT: purple red (RHS 61C-D)

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunjodi 042' was bred and developed by Penhow Nurseries in Carrow Hill, St. Brides Netherwent, Monmouthshire, United Kingdom. 'Sunjodi 042' originated from a controlled cross, conducted June 7, 2008, between the proprietary female parent, 'D5768', and propriety male parent, 'D899'. A single plant was selected from the resultant seedlings on August 20, 2008. Selection was based on strong and abundant stems, large and white coloured flowers. Asexual reproduction of 'Sunjodi 042 was first conducted by vegetative cuttings on May 21, 2009.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Sunjodi 042' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 15, 2016. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 29, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
