Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNCSBD' originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred between the female parent variety Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea' and pollen from an unknown male parent. 'SMNCSBD' was bred and developed by the breeder Timothy D. Wood in Grand Haven, Michigan, United States. In 2016, 'SMNCSBD' was selected as a single plant based on its compact plant habit, foliage and winter yellow stem colour and first propagated by softwood cuttings in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNCSBD' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring and summer of 2022 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and planted into containers in the spring of 2022. The trial was arranged outdoors in rows with 1 metre spacing between plants. Observations and measurements were taken on 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on July 5, 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
