Varieties used for comparison: 'Madonna' and 'Marginata'
Summary: The plants of 'Sanivalk' have a semi-upright growth habit while the plants of 'Marginata' have a spreading growth habit. The upper side of the young leaf of 'Sanivalk' is mainly yellow green with a lighter yellow green secondary colour whereas the young leaf of 'Madonna' is darker yellow green with a yellow orange secondary colour and that of 'Marginata' is mainly green with a yellow secondary colour. The secondary colour on the upper side of the mature leaf of 'Sanivalk' is greyed yellow whereas it is yellow for that of 'Madonna'.

LEAF: pinnate type, very short, very narrow to narrow
MATURE LEAF (UPPER SIDE): yellow green (darker than RHS 144A), secondary colour is solid or nearly solid greyed yellow (yellower than RHS 162D) along margin, weak glossiness
TERMINAL LEAFLET: very short to short, very narrow to narrow, medium length to width ratio, widest point at basal half, obtuse base, many shallow indentations along margin, no secondary leaflets
INFLORESCENCE: medium density, very narrow to narrow

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sanivalk' originated from a naturally occuring branch mutation of an unnamed proprietary Sambucus nigra seedling discovered by the breeder, Peter Brand, in April 2013 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. 'Sanivalk' was selected based on its plant growth habit, plant hardiness and leaf colour. Asexual reproduction of 'Sanivalk' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in the summer of 2013 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Sanivalk' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2016/1901, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France with the trials being conducted at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2017 and 2018. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
