Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Black Tower'

Summary: The plants of 'SNR1292' are smaller than the plants of 'Black Tower'. 'SNR1292' has sparse density of branching whereas 'Black Tower' has a medium density of branching. The leaflet blade on 'SNR1292' is attenuate shaped at the base with a cleft margin and lobing present whereas the leaflet blade on 'Black Tower' is oblique and obtuse shaped at the base with a deeply serrated margin and no lobing.

Description:

PLANT: shrub type, upright growth habit, columnar shaped, sparse branching
SHOOT / STEM: light brown, medium to thick, absent or very sparse pubescence, round in cross-section, rough, absent or very weak glaucosity, many protruding lenticels

LEAF: red petiole, compound, opposite arrangement along stem, no variegation
LEAFLET BLADE: lanceolate shape, acute and cuspidate at apex, attenuate at base, cleft margin, medium to deep cleft lobing
LEAF (UPPER SIDE AT MID-SEASON): medium to strong pubescence along midrib/veins, absent or sparse on blade, dark brown (RHS 200A-B)
LEAF (LOWER SIDE AT MID-SEASON): strong pubescence along midrib/viens, absent or sparse pubescence on blade, brown green (RHS 147C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'SNR1292' originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2005 by breeders Kenneth Richard Tobutt and Fiona Margaret Wilson in East Malling, Uinited Kingdom. 'SNR1292' was selected in 2006 based on criteria for plant growth habit, foliage colour and appearance, and flower colour. Asexual reproduction of 'SNR1292' was conducted by softwood cuttings in 2017 in East Malling, United Kingdom.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'SNR1292' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the summer of 2018, at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 7.6 litre containers on July 26, 2017. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety during the summer of 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
