Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Emerald Surprise'

Summary: 'Sunrise' is a shorter more narrow plant than 'Emerald Surprise'. The leaf blade of 'Sunrise' is wider and slightly longer than 'Emerald Surprise'. 'Sunrise' has a leaf blade shape that is obovate while 'Emerald Surprise' has an elliptic to ovate leaf blade shape. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is light yellow for 'Sunrise' while it is brown-green for 'Emerald Surprise'. The location of the secondary colour on the upper side of the leaf blade is in the center for 'Sunrise' while it is along the margin for 'Emerald Surprise'. There is a medium amount of secondary colouring of the leaf blade in 'Sunrise' while 'Emerald Surprise' has a small amount.

Description:

'Sunrise' is a vegetatively propagated perennial euonymus variety. 'Sunrise' has an upright-bushy growth habit and dense branching. The stems are light-green in colour and have no anthocyanin colouration, glaucosity, or pubescence. The stems are small to medium in thickness with a smooth shape. The leaves are simple and arranged in an opposite manner. The obovate shaped leaves have an acute shape of the apex, an obtuse shaped base, and a margin that is serrated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is light yellow with a secondary colour of light green to brownish-green. The secondary colour takes up a medium amount of the leaf blade and is located in the center. 'Sunrise' has petioles present.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunrise' was discovered as a sport/mutation of 'Emerald and Gold' by Erik Saeys, Oakville, Ontario, in 1978. It was selected for its superior variegation, its compact habit, and resistance to anthracnose.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunrise' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summers of 2000/2001. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 30 cm pots.
