Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Scirocco'
Summary: 'Snowbird' is a faba bean variety that produces plants with more stem nodes, up to and including the first flowering node, than the reference variety 'Scirocco'. 'Snowbird' does not have tannin whereas in 'Scirocco' tannins are present. The flower of 'Snowbird' does not have a wing melanin spot and there is no stem anthocyanin, both characteristics which are present in 'Scirocco'. The seed pods of 'Snowbird' are shorter than those of the reference variety and the seed weight is lighter.
Description:
'Snowbird' is a faba bean variety which has no seed tannin and which produces plants with medium green foliage. The variety flowers mid-season and there is no stem anthocyanin. The wing of the flower has no melanin spot and there is no anthocyanin colouration in the flower standard. The growth type is mainly determinate. In longitudinal section the dry seed is elliptic in shape and the colour of the testa immediately after harvest is grey beige. There is no black pigmentation of the hilum.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Snowbird' originated from a selection from the crossing of the varieties Alfred B x 8103. The original cross was made in 1989. In 1990 a single plant was selected in the F2, followed by line selection and replicated yield trials. The experimental number for 'Snowbird' was Cebeco 96921. The breeding process was carried out at the applicant's breeding station in Lelystad, The Netherlands. In the breeding of 'Snowbird' the selection criteria were yield, resistance to disease, resistance to lodging and earliness in maturity.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Snowbird' were conducted at Westlock, Alberta during 2001 and 2002. The trials consisted of 4 replicates per variety. Each plot was planted in 4 rows, spaced at 28cm, seeded to 6 metres and trimmed to 4 metres. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 30 measurements.
