Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Snowdrop' and 'Snowbird'

Summary: The leaflet of '219-16' is longer than that of 'Snowbird' and narrower than that of 'CDC Snowdrop'. The pod of '219-16' is shorter than that of 'Snowbird'. The weight of one hundred seeds of '219-16' is less than that of 'Snowbird'.

Description:

PLANT: mid-season flowering, medium green foliage

LEAFLET: maximum width located at middle

FLOWER: no melanin spot, no anthocyanin colouration on standard

POD: erect to semi-erect attitude, brown black at maturity

SEED: elliptic shaped median in longitudinal section, grey beige testa immediately after harvest, no black pigmentation of hilum

Origin & Breeding History: '219-16' originated from a cross conducted in 2005 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The cross was made between the varieties ('IPK296-78' x 'Snowbird') x ('IPK251-78' x 'Snowbird'). '219-16' was selected from an F8 sub-line derived from a single plant. Selection of '219-16' was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, days to flowering, days to maturity, lodging and plant height.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '219-16' were conducted during the summer of 2014 and 2015 at the Sutherland field site of the University of Saskatchewan near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The trials consisted of two replications in a RCB design. Planting density was 95 seeds per metre square, planted in three rows. The rows were 3.66 metres long with a row spacing of 0.30 metres. The observations and measurements were taken randomly from 60 plants of each variety.
