Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Fatima', 'SSNS-1' and 'FB9-4'

Summary: The plants of '186s-11' flower very early to early whereas those of 'SSNS-1' flower early to mid-season. The plants of '186s-11' are shorter than those of 'SSNS-1' and taller than those of 'FB9-4'. The leaflet of '186s-11' is narrower than that of 'CDC Fatima'. The pods of '186s-11' are larger than those of 'SSNS-1'. The weight of one hundred seeds of '186s-11' is greater than that of all the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: very early to early flowering, medium green foliage

LEAFLET: maximum width located at middle

FLOWER: black melanin spot present, very small extent of anthocyanin colouration on standard

POD: erect attitude, brown black at maturity

SEED: early to mid-season maturity, irregularly shaped median in longitudinal section, beige testa immediately after harvest, black pigmentation of hilum present

Origin & Breeding History: '186s-11' originated from a cross conducted in 2004 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The cross was made between the varieties 'Reina Blanca' and 'Puebla'. '186s-11' was selected from an F8 sub-line derived from a single plant. Selection of '186s-11' was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, days to flowering, days to maturity, lodging and plant height.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '186s-11' were conducted during the summer of 2014 and 2015 at the Preston field site of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The trials consisted of two replications in a RCB design. Planting density was 40 seeds per metre square, planted in three rows. The rows were 3.66 metres long with a row spacing of 0.30 metres. The observations and measurements were taken randomly from 60 plants of each variety.
