Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Snowbird' and 'DL Rico'

Summary: The leaflets of 'DL Tesoro' are longer than those of 'Snowbird' and smaller than those of 'DL Rico'. At the beginning of ripening, the pod of 'DL Tesoro' has a semi-erect attitude while the pod of 'Snowbird' has an erect attitude. Excluding the beak, the pod of 'DL Tesoro' is longer than that of 'Snowbird'. The plants of 'DL Tesoro' mature late season whereas the plants of 'Snowbird' mature mid-season. The one hundred dry seed weight of 'DL Tesoro' is greater than that of 'Snowbird'.

Description:

PLANT: indeterminate growth type, flowers mid-season, matures late season

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration, medium number of nodes up to and including the first flowering node

FOLIAGE: medium green, maximum width of leaflet positioned at middle

FLOWER: melanin spot absent on wing, anthocyanin colouration on standard absent

POD: semi-erect attitude, brown black colour at maturity
SEED: elliptic shape in median longitudinal section, grey beige colour of testa immediately after harvest, black pigmentation of hilum absent

Origin & Breeding History: 'DL Tesoro' (experimental designation NPZ 14.7310) originated from a cross conducted between breeding line NPZ 06.7101 and the variety 'Melodie' at the breeding station in Hohenlieth, Germany in 2006. A pedigree breeding method was used. The filial cross was bulked and the population was inbred by selfing until the F6 generation. In 2010, a single F6 plant was selected, and multiplied for testing in several environments. Simultaneously, the variety was purified and multiplied under bee proof tents and later in local isolation during the next generations. The F6 to F8 generations were tested in Germany and evaluated for stability, purity, yield and standability. The line was trialed in Canada in 2012 at greater than the F9 generation and selected for improved agronomic performance. It was entered into the Faba Bean Cooperative Trials in 2016 and 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'DL Tesoro' were conducted at the DL Seeds Research Station in Morden, Manitoba during the 2020 and 2021 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Plots consisted of 6 rows 4 metres in length with a row spacing of 17 cm and a planting density of 50 plants per square metre. For each variety, measurements were based on a minimum of 100 measurements per year, except for seed weight which was based on 3 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
