Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'DL Rico' and 'Fabelle'
Summary: The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of ‘Allison' is weak whereas it is absent on the stem of ‘DL Rico'. The leaflets of ‘Allison' are shorter and narrower than the leaflets of ‘DL Rico'. ‘Allison' has a shorter flower than that of ‘Fabelle'. The wing of ‘Allison' has a black melanin spot and the extent of anthocyanin colouration on the flower standard is small whereas ‘DL Rico' has no melanin spot or anthocyanin colouration. At the beginning of ripening, the plants of ‘Allison' are shorter than the plants of ‘DL Rico'. Excluding the beak, the pod of ‘Allison' is shorter than those of the reference varieties and narrower than that of ‘DL Rico'. Immediately after harvest, the colour of the testa of the dry seed of ‘Allison' is beige whereas it is grey beige for ‘DL Rico'.
Description:
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, flowers mid to late season, matures mid-season
STEM: weak anthocyanin colouration, few nodes up to and including the first flowering node
FOLIAGE: medium green, maximum width of leaflets positioned towards the base
FLOWER: black melanin spot present on wing, small extent of anthocyanin colouration on standard
POD: erect attitude, brown black colour at maturity
SEED: elliptic shape in median longitudinal section, beige colour of testa immediately after harvest, black pigmentation of hilum absent
Origin & Breeding History: ‘Allison' (experimental designations NPZ18.7306 and DL18.7306) originated by crossing the F1 of ‘Styria' and ‘Disco' with ‘Fabelle', as the female parent, and the F1 of ‘Compass' and ‘Marcel' with ‘Goldrush', as the male parent, at the breeding station in Hohenlieth, Germany in 2008. Pedigreed breeding and selection methods were used. A single plant was selected in 2012 at the F5 generation based on standability, protein content, plant height, pod fertility, maturity, and low vicine and convicine content. From 2013 and 2014, the F7 and F8 generations were tested in Germany and also evaluated for stability, purity, yield and resistance to Chocolate spot and Downy mildew. Breeder seed was established after the F8 generation in 2017.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘Allison' were conducted at the DL Seeds Research Station in Morden, Manitoba during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB Design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Plots consisted of 6 rows 4 metres in length with a row spacing of 17 cm and a planting density of 50 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 100 measurements of each variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
