Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Navi' and 'CDC 1310'

Summary: The basal pair of leaflets at the second flowering node of ‘CDC 2235' are shorter than those of ‘CDC 1310'. At the beginning of ripening, the plants of ‘CDC 2235' are shorter than those of ‘Navi'. The plants of ‘CDC 2235' mature earlier than those of ‘Navi'. The one hundred dry seed weight of ‘CDC 2235' is less than those of ‘Navi' and ‘CDC 1310'.

Description:

Plant: indeterminate growth type, flowers mid-season, matures mid-season

Stem: medium number of nodes up to and including the first flowering node

Foliage: medium green, maximum width of leaflet positioned at middle,

Flower: wing melanin spot absent, no anthocyanin colouration on standard

Pod: erect attitude, brown/black colour at maturity
Seed: elliptic shape in median longitudinal section, grey beige colour of testa immediately after harvest, no black of pigmentation of hilum

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC 2235' (experimental designation 2235-2-29) originated from a cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The initial crosses between ‘Navi' and ‘346-10' as well as between ‘Navi' and ‘346-11' were conducted in the fall of 2014. In the summer of 2015, the two resulting progeny lines were crossed. Plant selections were made at the F2 and F3 generations, based on vicine/co-vicine content, yield, seed weight, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging, plant height and disease resistance. Breeder seed was established using 21 F11 sub-lines in 2025.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC 2235' were conducted at the Sutherland Field site of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 43 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements of each variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 12 measurement per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
