Summary: 'AC Nugget' is a yellow seeded flax variety which differs from 'Omega' in the colours at the top of the filament and style (blue for 'AC Nugget' and white for 'Omega') and in the stigma colour (pale violet for 'AC Nugget' and white in 'Omega'). Ciliation of the false septa is absent in 'AC Nugget' but present in '989' and 'Omega'. The seed colour of 'AC Nugget' is yellow, whereas it is brown in 'Flanders'. 'AC Nugget' has low linoleic and high linolenic acid contents, while '989' has high linoleic and low linolenic acid contents.
Description:
'AC Nugget' is an oilseed flax variety. The hypocotyl of the seedlings has weak anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are medium sized and flattened disk shape, with no longitudinal folding of the petals. There is no sepal dotting. The flowers of 'AC Nugget' are medium blue and the filament is blue at the top and white at the base. The anther is blue, with clear pollen. The style is blue at the base and violet at the top, with a violet stigma.
'AC Nugget' matures mid-season and produces a medium sized capsule which is semi-dehiscent. Ciliation of the false septa is absent. The seeds are yellow and small to medium in size.
'AC Nugget' is moderately resistant to flax wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini). The variety is resistant to North American flax rust races.
'AC Nugget' has good resistance to shattering and capsule loss and fair to good resistance to lodging. It has a moderate capability to produce basal branching.
Origin & Breeding History: 'AC Nugget' was developed at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, from the backcross AFP 9007/Flanders. AFP 9007 is an accession from Germany which has yellow seed colour controlled by a single dominant gene. A BC5F4 line was selected in 1995 which exhibited a stable yellow seed colour, and agronomic and quality characteristics similar to that of the recurrent parent, 'Flanders'. The line, designated as M4853, was evaluated in 1996 in preliminary yield tests conducted in Manitoba.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'AC Nugget' were conducted at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, during 1999 and 2000. The trials consisted of 3 replications per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 100 measurements per year.
