Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Watson', 'AC Emerson', 'CDC Bethune' and 'Norlin'
Summary: 'Hanley' is an oilseed flax variety that has weak to medium sepal dotting, whereas sepal dotting is absent in all of the reference varieties. The filament of 'Hanley' is blue at the top, whereas it is white at the top in 'AC Watson', 'AC Emerson' and 'Norlin'. 'Hanley' has a light violet stigma, while 'AC Emerson', 'Norlin' and 'CDC Bethune' have a white stigma. Ciliation of the false septa is present in 'Hanley' and absent in 'AC Watson' and 'CDC Bethune'.
Description:
'Hanley' is an oilseed flax variety. The hypocotyls of the seedlings have very weak or no anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are medium sized and flattened disk shape, with no longitudinal folding of the petals. Sepal dotting is weak to medium. The flowers of 'Hanley' are medium blue and the filament is blue at the top and white at the base. The anther is blue, with clear pollen. The style is white at the bottom and at the top, with a light violet stigma.
'Hanley' matures mid-season and produces a medium sized capsule which is semi-dehiscent. Ciliation of the false septa is present. The seeds are medium brown and medium in size.
'Hanley' is resistant to flax wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini). The variety is immune to North American flax rust races.
'Hanley' has good resistance to shattering, capsule loss and lodging. It has a moderate capability to produce basal branching.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Hanley', which was tested under the experimental number FP1094, was developed at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, from the cross 'Flanders' / 'AC Emerson', made in 1991. In the development of FP1094, the F2 and subsequent generations were advanced using the pedigree method with selection pressure for oil content, oil quality, lodging resistance, chlorosis tolerance and rust resistance. Single plant selection was made in the F3 and F5 generations. An F7 line, designated M4119, was selected and evaluated in preliminary yield trials in 1995 and for Fusarium wilt in the Fusarium wilt nurseries in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The line was evaluated as FP1094 in the 1997 Flax Joint Project test at 10 locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and in the Flax Cooperative test from 1998 to 2000.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Hanley' were conducted at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, during 2000 and 2001. The trials consisted of 2 replicates of 4-row plots. The plots were 5.5 metres long and the rows were spaced at 30 cm. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 50 measurements per year.
